People are at the heart of everything that happens at St Peter's. The church has played a role in the spiritual and social lives of its immediate neighbourhood and beyond for two centuries. Under its roof, people continue to gather, worship, and explore faith and reach out to those on the margins of our city as we walk shoulder to shoulder together through life's celebrations and sadnesses.<\/p><\/div><\/a><\/div><\/article>

Over the years, St Peter's magnificent building has been the setting for many joyous occasions including thousands of beautiful weddings.<\/p><\/div><\/a><\/div><\/article>

Designed by architect Charles Barry in 1824 and built using techniques that were cutting-edge in their day, the church is an iconic landmark in our city.<\/p><\/div><\/a><\/div><\/article>

Thanks to its clock tower, St Peter's Church is instantly recognisable to any Brighton resident and visible from numerous points around our city.<\/p><\/div><\/a><\/div><\/article>

The Project<\/h4>

On 8 May 1824 the foundation stone for St Peter's Church was laid. Two hundred years later, we are celebrating that key moment with a series of projects and events that highlight the history of the church, its evolution as a centre for worship and community connection, and its ongoing impact on the lives of local Brighton residents.<\/p><\/div><\/a><\/div><\/article>

A lot has happened since the building of St. Peter\u2019s Church was first envisaged in the early 19th century. In the \u2018History\u2019 section, we take a look at people and events that have played a role from then to now.<\/p><\/div><\/a><\/div><\/article>

Stained Glass Windows<\/h4>

St. Peter\u2019s Church Brighton has a wealth of windows which are adorned with stained glass. There is so much to detect and to learn about how our ancestors tried to beautify their place of worship. This was done at great expense by devoted individuals. Spending time unlocking these secrets is also honouring their legacy and their desire to honour God.<\/p><\/div><\/a><\/div><\/article>

\"Memorial<\/div>

Memorial Plaques<\/h4>

St. Peter's Church houses a number of memorial plaques. Most of them were dedicated for deceased dignitaries or relatives. But there are also some which commemorate certain occasions like construction milestones. Weddings in the 1940s<\/h4>

The Second World War brought air raids, rationing and a raft of other restrictions to the people of Brighton, many of whom were called up to serve in the armed forces. During these years of hardship, the church served as the venue for a number of weddings, happy intervals full of hope for the future in a challenging time.<\/p><\/div><\/a><\/div><\/article>

Weddings in the 1970s<\/h4>

A bride in a white lace, high-necked dress with puffed sleeves and a floor-length maxi skirt accompanied by matching bridesmaids in flower crowns. A groom in a wide-collar suit and big tie. These are the hallmarks of a 1970s wedding. Brides who got married in the church during that decade share stories of their special day with us.<\/p><\/div><\/a><\/div><\/article>

Well into the 1990s, St Peter's remained a popular place to get married.
