Most of them commemorate deceased relatives or friends.\u00a0 We tried to find out a little more about their lives and their stories. Links to online resources are given, where they are available.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row el_class=&#8221;py-0&#8243;][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The North Window<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/stpetersbrighton.org\/heritage\/stained-glass-windows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Window<\/a> is dedicated to Queen Victoria.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;25px&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7303&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The dedicational text reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Giving thanks to Almighty God, the King of Kings, for the Life and happy Reign of Victoria, for 63 years Queen of these realms, the people of Brighton dedicate this window to His Glory and for the adornment of his Church. Feast of St. Peter, A.D. 1906.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queen_Victoria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Queen Victoria<\/a> was born 24\/05\/1819. She ascended to the throne 20\/06\/1837 and reigned until she died (22\/01\/1901). She married in 1840 and had nine children, who married into the nobility across the continent. Therefore she was called by some the \u2018grandmother of Europe\u2019.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;100px&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The Crucifixion Window<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/stpetersbrighton.org\/heritage\/the-crucifixion-window\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crucifixion Window<\/a> is dedicated to the memory of Edward Hoadly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;25px&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7309&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The dedicational text reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>To the glory of God, and in affectionate memory of Edward Hoadly, churchwarden of Brighton 1896, and who died 30th April 1897, aged 64 years, his widow has caused this window to be erected.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/genealogy\/records\/edward-hoadly-24-8b79vw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edward Hoadly<\/a> (10\/07\/1832 &#8211; 30\/04\/1897) was born in Northampton Borough, Northamptonshire, to William Hoadly and Sophia Maria Still. He married <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/genealogy\/records\/emily-pannett-24-k7kwkb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emily Pannett<\/a> (13\/05\/1830 \u2013 08\/01\/1862). They had one child, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/genealogy\/records\/edward-monk-hoadly-24-pgjh7z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edward Monk Hoadly<\/a>, who is commemorated in a different stained glass window. After the death of his first wife, Edward Hoadly married his sister in law, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/genealogy\/records\/eliza-cain-pannett-24-c2s94\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eliza Cain Pannett<\/a> (31\/10\/1827 \u2013 09\/01\/1903).[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;100px&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The Via Dolorosa Window<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/stpetersbrighton.org\/heritage\/the-via-dolorosa-window\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Via Dolorosa Window<\/a> is dedicated to the memory of Jane and John Chester Craven.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;25px&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7316&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The dedicational text reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>In honour of the Holy Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ and in memory of John Chester Craven, Civil Engineer, who died June xxvii<sup>th<\/sup> A.D. mdccclxxxvii, aged lxxiii years, and Jane his wife who died June iv<sup>th<\/sup> mdcccxcix, aged lxxiii years, Mary Hallett their daughter dedicates this window.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/genealogy\/records\/john-chester-craven-24-25hgp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Chester Craven<\/a> was born 11\/09\/1813 in Hunslet, Yorkshire. He was a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Chester_Craven\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">locomotive engineer<\/a>. He married <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/genealogy\/records\/mary-craven-24-lqg3dv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jane Jefferson<\/a> (born in 1817) and had four children, among them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/genealogy\/records\/mary-craven-24-lqg3dv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mary Craven<\/a>, who married William Henry Hallett. She dedicated this window. John Chester Craven died 27\/06\/1887 in Brighton, Sussex.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;100px&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The Annunciation Window<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/stpetersbrighton.org\/heritage\/the-annunciation-window\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Annunciation Window<\/a> is dedicated to Anne Sophia Hannah.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;25px&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7557&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The dedicational text reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>To the glory of God and the honoured memory of Anne Sophia wife of John Hannah, Vicar of Brighton, she died February 25th 1876 in the 59th year of her age.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Anne Sophia Hannah (1818 \u2013 1876) was born as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/genealogy\/records\/anne-sophia-gregory-24-22lf6m0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anne Sophia Gregory<\/a> in Nottinghamshire. She married John Hannah (16\/07\/1818 \u2013 01\/06\/1888), the vicar of Brighton, and had two children, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/genealogy\/records\/john-julius-hannah-24-p0vp1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Julius Hannah<\/a> (1844 \u2013 1931) and Charlotte Mary Hannah (1846 \u2013 1870). She married <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/genealogy\/records\/edward-hoadly-24-8b79vw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edward Hoadly<\/a> (10\/07\/1832 \u2013 30\/04\/1897) and had one child, Edward Monk Hoadly (1861 \u2013 1880). She died in Brighton, Sussex. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/genealogy\/records\/edward-monk-hoadly-24-pgjh7z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edward Monk Hoadly<\/a> (1861 \u2013 04\/1880) was born in Brighton, Sussex. Born Nov 2nd 1804 died June 25th 1872<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Peter De Lancey (02\/11\/1804 \u2013 25\/06\/1872) was born in Guernsey. He married Carolina Gardener in Saint James Westminster Parish, Middlesex, on 28\/12\/1845. He is the father of Lieutenant Colonel John De Lancey, who is also commemorated on a stained glass window in St. Peter&#8217;s Church. Peter De Lancey died in Brighton at the age of 65. His military rank was also that of a Lieutenant Colonel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The second light of the <a href=\"https:\/\/stpetersbrighton.org\/heritage\/three-nt-stories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Three NT Stories<\/a> Window is dedicated to Charles Adolphus Dorey.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;25px&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7336&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The dedicational text reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>In memory of Charles Adolphus Dorey BA of St Johns College, Cambridge. Died at Elgin April 9th 1876 at 23.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Charles Adolphus Dorey (29\/08\/1853 \u2013 09\/04\/1876) was the son of Charles Dorey and his wife Jane Elizabeth. He achieved a BA at S. John\u2019s College, Cambridge, and was a Mathematics Teacher in Elgin, Moray, Scotland, where he died, only 23 years old.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The third light of the <a href=\"https:\/\/stpetersbrighton.org\/heritage\/three-nt-stories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Three NT Stories<\/a> Window is dedicated by Edward Richards Adams.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;25px&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7337&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The dedicational text reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>To the Glory of God &amp; in memory of blessings received, this light is dedicated by Edward Richards-Adams 1882.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/genealogy\/records\/edward-richards-adams-24-3yqjyf3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edward Richards Adams<\/a> (07\/1841 \u2013 14\/03\/1901) was born in St. Giles, London. He married <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/genealogy\/records\/frances-fanny-louisa-daveney-24-245c6hn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frances Fanny Louisa Daveney<\/a> (1838 \u2013 1899). From 1879 to 1881 he was in St. Peter\u2019s Church Brighton as Clerk in Holy Orders. We do not know which blessings he received, but when he left St. Peter\u2019s Church Brighton in 1881, he became vicar of Basingstoke, where he died in 1901.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;100px&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The Mary and John Window<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The first light of the <a href=\"https:\/\/stpetersbrighton.org\/heritage\/mary-and-john\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mary and John<\/a> Window is dedicated to Lieutenant John De Lancey.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;25px&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7328&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The dedicational text reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>In thankfulness to God for the dear memory of Lieut. John De Lancey 71st Regt. who fell asleep 10th August 1923, aged 79 years this window is dedicated.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>John De Lancey (25\/05\/1844 \u2013 25\/05\/1923) was born in Plymouth, Devon. His parents were Lieutenant Colonel Peter De Lancey and Caroline Gardener, his sister was Annie De Lancey. She was one year younger than John. In the 1911 census John De Lancey is registered as single, retired Lieutenant Colonel, and living in Brighton. He was then 66 years old. He died at the age of 79.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The second light of the <a href=\"https:\/\/stpetersbrighton.org\/heritage\/mary-and-john\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mary and John<\/a> window is dedicated to Edwin Bower Lethbridge, his wife Margaret Elizabeth and their son Arthur Gordon Lethbridge.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;25px&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7329&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The dedicational text reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>For a remembrance before God of Edwin Bower Lethbridge who died Feb. 26th 1932, and of Margaret Elizabeth his wife who died April 10th 1919: also of their son Arthur Gordon Lethbridge who died Jan. 25th 1907 this window is dedicated.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/genealogy\/records\/edwin-bower-lethbridge-24-2799t6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edwin Bower Lethbridge<\/a> (1848 \u2013 26\/02\/1932) was born in Newton Abbot, Devon. He married <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/genealogy\/records\/margaret-elizabeth-lord-24-2799t9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Margaret Elizabeth Lord<\/a> (08\/09\/1845 \u2013 10\/04\/1919), who was born in Margate, Kent. They had (at least) three children. Their son <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/genealogy\/records\/arthur-g-lethbridge-24-27dh44\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arthur Gordon Lethbridge<\/a> (07\/1885 \u2013 25\/01\/1907), who was born in Brighton, died at the early age of 21. Edwin Lethbridge was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.varndean.co.uk\/about-us\/our-history-alumni#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">headmaster<\/a> of York Place Boys&#8217; School.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The third light of the <a href=\"https:\/\/stpetersbrighton.org\/heritage\/mary-and-john\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mary and John<\/a> window is dedicated to Edmund Chaplin Baldwin.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;25px&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7330&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The dedicational text reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>To the Glory of God and in affectionate memory of <\/em><em>1860 Edmund Chaplin Baldwin 1935<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/genealogy\/records\/edmund-chaplin-baldwin-24-1sdp1gd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edmund Chaplin Baldwin<\/a> (10\/1860 \u2013 09\/06\/1935) was born in Freckenham, Suffolk. He married\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/genealogy\/records\/dorothy-barraclough-24-1hkk0h7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dorothy Barraclough<\/a> (12\/1855 \u2013 06\/08\/1939) and had one son, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/genealogy\/records\/harry-bardsley-chaplin-baldwin-24-223qnjy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harry Bardsley Chaplin Baldwin<\/a> (08\/09\/1885 \u2013 29\/12\/1937).\u00a0 He was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brightonhistory.org.uk\/people\/people_b.html#BaldwinEC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chartered accountant and auditor<\/a>. He is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/32290269\/edmund_chaplin-baldwin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">buried<\/a> at the Extra-Mural Cemetery in Brighton. She was born in Brighton. \u00a0The couple had eleven children. She was born in Toothills, Annan, DFS, Scotland as daughter of Alexandrina Shannon and William Charles Thomson. They had no children.
