It is the largest window in St. Peter\u2019s. Looking at it can be quite overwhelming. But when viewed in sections, it becomes much easier to unlock the obvious and the hidden messages.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]This stained glass window was manufactured by the \u2018<strong>Kempe Studio for Stained Glass and Church Furniture\u2019<\/strong> in 1906.[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"simple-link text-left\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Eamer_Kempe#\">Find out more about Charles Eamer Kempe HERE<span class=\"link-arrow\"><i class=\"hc-arrow-round-forward\"><\/i><\/span><\/a><\/div>[vc_empty_space height=&#8221;44px&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7382&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;44px&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The Angelic Realm<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;12px&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]The top section of this window is dominated by a host of angels. These are depicted with different items like banners or shields with coats of arms or symbols. They seem to watch over all that is happening below.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7415&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]The second row of angels are holding banners containing the opening verses of the \u2018<strong><em>Te Deum<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 in Latin. The text is heavily abbreviated due to space restraints.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7383&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]The original would have read as:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Te Deum laudamus &#8211; <\/em><em>te Dominum confitemur. &#8211; <\/em><em>Te aeternum Patrem &#8211;\u00a0 <\/em><em>omnis terra veneratur. &#8211;\u00a0 <\/em><em>Tibi omnes Angeli; &#8211;\u00a0 <\/em><em>tibi caeli et universae Potestates; &#8211; <\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Tibi Cherubim et Seraphim &#8211; <\/em><em>incessabili voce proclamant: &#8211; <\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, &#8211;\u00a0 <\/em><em>Dominus Deus Sabaoth.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We praise you, God &#8211; we honour you Lord. &#8211; You, the eternal Father, &#8211; all the earth worships &#8211; All the angels, &#8211; the heavens and the powers of the universe, &#8211; Cherubim and Seraphim &#8211; cry out to you with unceasing voice: &#8211; Holy, Holy, Holy, &#8211; <\/em><em>Lord God of Hosts.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7384&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]Below these another ten angels are depicted carrying shields with symbols of the passion. We see from left to right the seamless garment, Judas\u2019 purse, the three dices, the sponge on a stick crossed with the spear, the ladder, the two crossed scourges, the three nails, crossed hammer and tongs, the Christogram \u2018<em>IHC<\/em>\u2019, and the cross.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7385&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]At the flanks of the angels, surrounded by artistic embellishments, are two sections with four angels each holding shields, nine of them with coats of arms and one with the year of the dedication of this window, mcmvi (1906). On top of each of these two groups of four angels is the logo that is often used in <strong>Kempe<\/strong> stained glass windows \u2013 a single sheaf of wheat.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;44px&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The Heavenly Realm<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;12px&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]In the centre below the host of angels we see Jesus enthroned in glory, with ministering angels all around him. His halo shows \u2018Fleurs de Lys\u2019. His garments are richly decorated with precious stones and rays of light are going out from him.<\/p>\n<p>To his right we see Mary with richly decorated garments and a banner, floating behind her shoulders, with the words:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Maria virgo\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/em>\u00a0<em>the Virgin Mary<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To his left Peter is depicted with the symbolic keys, richly decorated garments, and a banner floating behind his shoulders with his name.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7386&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]Below the scene depicting Jesus with ministering angels, Mary and Peter, we see two NT figures to the left, the archangel Gabriel in the middle and another four NT figures to the right.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7387&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;44px&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Earthly Realm<\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;12px&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]On either side of the middle section of the window we find a group of nine historic figures: Martyrs, Monks, Priests, Bishops and Kings. Martyrs can be recognised by the palm leaves they are holding, bishops by mitre and staff, and kings by their crowns. These figures are arranged in three rows and three columns each.<\/p>\n<p>One could see these as a cloud of witnesses for the Gospel. They are a testimony to God\u2019s care for us humans throughout the centuries, how He has kept the knowledge about salvation alive, even in the face of hostility and persecution. The most ancient of these figures represents Stephen, the first martyr. The most recent of these figures represents Queen Victoria.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7388&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7453&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7391&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7454&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7394&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7393&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;44px&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7303&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]The <a href=\"https:\/\/stpetersbrighton.org\/heritage\/stained-glass-window-dedications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dedicational text<\/a> can be found in the lower right corner of the window. It reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Giving thanks to Almighty God, the <\/em><br \/>\n<em>King of Kings, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queen_Victoria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for the Life and happy <\/a><\/em><br \/>\n<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queen_Victoria\">Reign of Victoria<\/a>, for 63 years Queen <\/em><br \/>\n<em>of these realms, the people of <\/em><br \/>\n<em>Brighton dedicate this window to His <\/em><br \/>\n<em>Glory and for the adornment of this <\/em><br \/>\n<em>church.
