It is a Kempe window and was manufactured 1907.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7645&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]This stained glass window consists of five tiers. On top are two angels with banners, followed further down by three regal figures, left and right a king and in the middle the daughter and wife of a king, who became an Abbess. This is followed by a band of six angels with musical instruments. The lowest tier shows Jesus, calling Peter to follow him.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Angelic Realm<\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;64px&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7646&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]The two angels in the top tier each hold a banner. The banners read:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>O sing unto the Lord a new song\u00a0 \u00a0<\/em><em>let the congregation of Saints praise Him <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Kings and Queens<\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;64px&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7647&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]The next tier shows three regal, historical figures with crowns, richly decorated clothing, and insignia of power. The figure to the left represents Edmund of East Anglia. He lived in the 9th century and died 869 at the hands of the Vikings.<\/p>\n<p>The figure to the right represents Edward the Confessor. He was born around 1003 and died 1066. He is described as an Anglo Saxon English king.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7648&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]The figure in the middle represents Etheldreda, the daughter of king Anna of East Anglia. She lived from around 636 to 679 and founded a double monastery. She is depicted with a model of Ely Cathedral in her arms. On the banner underneath the cathedral we read:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Eccles Elien<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>which is probably the abbreviation for<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Ecclesia Eliensis.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Calling of Peter<\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;64px&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7649&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]The bottom tier shows Jesus in the middle with halo and \u2018Fleurs de Lys\u2019. Around his head floats a banner with the words:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Fear not, from henceforth thou shalt catch men. <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the left light we see the sail of a boat in the background, and in the foreground two figures with halo, one is kneeling. According to \u2018The Corpus of Kempe Stained Glass in the UK and Ireland\u2019 they represent Peter (in the foreground) and Andrew. The two figures in the right light with halo are said to represent John and James. They are depicted alongside three figures without halo, probably their father and two hired men.<\/p>\n<p>The logo of C E Kempe &amp; Co Ltd, a single wheat sheaf with superimposed black tower, can be seen next to Peter\u2019s right foot.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;44px&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7650&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]The <a href=\"https:\/\/stpetersbrighton.org\/heritage\/stained-glass-window-dedications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dedicational text<\/a> reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>This window was dedicated on the Feast <\/em><br \/>\n<em>of St. Peter 1909, in grateful memory of <\/em><br \/>\n<em><a href=\"https:\/\/stpetersbrighton.org\/heritage\/stained-glass-window-dedications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Annie Barbara<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/genealogy\/records\/anne-thomson-24-p0vp0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wife of John Julius Hannah<\/a>, <\/em><br \/>\n<em>Vicar of Brighton 1888-1902, and Dean <\/em><br \/>\n<em>of Chichester, who died May 10: 1907.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The date of death is different to that to be found in some online sources, who claim she died on August 30th, not May 10th 1907.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>All images \u00a9 B. van Cleve<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stpetersbrighton.org\/heritage\/the-ruth-window\/\"><strong>\u2190 previous window<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0<strong>&#8211; <\/strong>\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/stpetersbrighton.org\/heritage\/the-martyrs-window\/\">next window \u2192<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stpetersbrighton.org\/heritage\/floor-plan-for-stained-glass-windows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Floor plan of stained glass windows in St. Peter&#8217;s church Brighton<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The &#8216;Fishers of Men&#8217; window is situated on the west side of St. Peter&#8217;s church.
