Three NT Stories

by B. van Cleve

The ‘Three NT Stories’ window is situated on the east side of the church. It does not have the deep, rich colours typical for Kempe windows and the halo of Jesus does not show the typical three ‘Fleurs de Lys’ in two of the lights, but only simpler line embellishments. Also no Kempe logo could be found. But ‘The Kempe Stained Glass in the UK and Ireland’ states that this window was completed in 1882.

This window consists of three lights. Every light is dedicated to a different person.

The First Disciples

The first light shows John the Baptist with halo in the background. He is dressed in very plain clothes and is carrying a standard with a cross.

Two disciples, Andrew and John, both with halo and in richly ornamented clothing, are depicted on the left side of the light. The banner floating above their heads reads:

Rabbi, where dwellest thou

Jesus is depicted on the right side. He has a halo, which is segmented in the same way as in most of the Kempe windows, but it does not show the typical ‘Fleurs de Lys’. His clothes are richly ornamented. The banner by his head reads:

come & see

The dedicational text for this light reads:

To the Glory of God & the honoured memory
of Leut Colonel De Lancey of Guernsey.
Born Nov 2nd 1804 died June 25th 1872

The Empty Tomb

The second light shows three women with halo at the empty tomb. Two angels are
depicted with wings and sceptre, talking to the women. The banner floating above
the scene reads:

He is not here but is risen Alleluia

The dedicational text for this light reads:

In the memory of Charles Adolphus Dorey
BA of S Johns College, Cambridge:
Died at Elgin April 9th 1876 at 23

The Stoning of Stephen

The third light shows the stoning of Stephen. He is depicted kneeling and praying. An angry crowd with clenched fists and stones is gathered in the background. Jesus, with ‘Fleurs de Lys’ in his halo, is standing bent slightly forward, watching the scene from above. He is depicted in glory.

The dedicational text for this light reads:

To the Glory of God & in memory of
blessings received, this light is dedicated
by Edward Richards-Adams 1882
