St Peter’s Church Oil Painting by J Attree 1846 held by Brighton & Hove Museums

History

A lot has happened since the building of St. Peter’s Church was first envisaged in the early 19th century. In the ‘History’ section, we take a look at people and events that have played a role from then to now.

In 2007, St. Peter's Church came to within an inch of being demolished. Hundreds of letters in the Church archives tell the story of how it was saved.

As one enters St. Peter’s church, a plaque urges the viewer to remember "the brothers and sisters of Brighton who gave their lives" in the Great War. A Roll of Honour, once kept in the church but now in the Keep, lists three names of women, but provides no information on their service or fate. We have tried to find these three people, and to tell as much as we can of their story.
